“…let me give you a piece of advice. The handsome young fellow who’s trying to rescue you from a hideous fate is never wrong. Not even if he says the sky is purple and made of hedgehogs.” –William Herondale

Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare will make you laugh and fall in love at the same time. As possibly my favorite book I have ever read, I found it to be interestingly unique from any book I have ever read. Take Theresa Gray, or Tessa, as she is referred to, for example. Many books that I have read recently take the female image and turn it into a warrior of the most unimaginable measures. In Clockwork Angel, however, we see Tessa as the typical 1800’s woman- one who feels that she is not to speak against a man or that the servants should not do so either. What Tessa doesn’t realize, however, is that she is not who she thinks she is and finds that she is capable of more than just the typical female of her time.

Then we have Will Herondale. There is something very strange about him. He is arrogant in general and seemingly stupid in his pursuits. Yet you can’t help but wonder if there is something behind is stone exterior that makes him that way. We see that he may have a heart until he shuts himself out again. His outward exterior would seem as though any woman would want to hate him, but it is that strange mystery about him that makes the reader fall in love with him.

Aside from Will we also have Jem who has a secret of his own- a certain “disability” as one had suggested in the novel and it was absolutely shocking and unimaginable to find out what that was. Jem is so different from Will in that he is very deep and philosophical, yet they are so much alike because they both have their secrets.

I am finding that no one is who they seem in this book which only adds to its appeal. Secrets are everywhere in an immense pool of lies and deception throughout the pages. Yet not all is dark in its appearance and you find yourself longing to know more. For me it was so much more that I gave this book a five star rating and immediately picked up the second book- Clockwork Prince!
